Rooted In Schweitzer: A Legacy Of Mountain Living

For Tomlinson Sotheby’s International Realty agent Chris Neu, Schweitzer Mountain is more than a destination—it’s home. In this recollection, Chris shares the personal history, family legacy, and lived experience that have shaped his connection to Schweitzer and the surrounding mountain community.

Schweitzer Mountain Resort isn’t just a place I work—it’s home. My connection to this mountain runs deep, woven through generations of my family who have lived, worked, and played here. For me, Schweitzer is more than just a world-class ski destination; it’s a piece of my history, a legacy of adventure, and a community I am proud to be part of.

My grandfather, Sam Wormington, played a defining role in shaping Schweitzer as we know it today. In 1962, he was recruited from Canada to design the resort—from its ski runs to its buildings—laying the foundation for a destination that has since become a cornerstone of the Sandpoint community.

As Schweitzer’s first mountain manager, he brought his passion and expertise as a former ski racer and ski jumper, fresh off the success of founding Kimberley Ski Area in British Columbia. His vision lives on, quite literally, in the terrain—there’s even a run named after him, Sam’s Alley. Originally designed as a downhill racecourse, it’s a fast and rolling tribute to his love of the sport.

Skiing is in my family’s blood. My mother was a ski racer, and from the time I could walk, she had me on skis, carving my first turns at Schweitzer and other nearby mountains. My sister and I grew up in these lift lines, racing down these slopes, and embracing the mountain lifestyle that makes Schweitzer so special. Over the past 45+ years, I’ve watched this resort evolve while still retaining the magic that makes it unique.

Growing up in the Sandpoint and Schweitzer Mountain communities has given me a deep understanding of what works here—what makes a home or investment truly fit this mountain lifestyle. As someone who has lived, skied, and worked in this region for a lifetime, I bring a perspective that goes beyond property lines. Whether you’re looking for a slopeside retreat, a year-round escape, or an investment in a mountain community, I’m here to help you find the perfect fit. Schweitzer isn’t just a place to ski; it’s a way of life. And for me, it’s home.
