For man, the image of North Idaho begins at the water’s edge. Beyond the lakes, mountain lodge-style homes reflect the region’s forested terrain and four-season lifestyle. Exposed timber beams, natural stone, and inviting fireplaces create spaces that feel both grounded and enduring — designed as much for snowy winters as for quiet summer evenings.
In contrast, modern Northwest architecture offers a more contemporary expression of North Idaho living. Clean lines, natural materials, and floor-to-ceiling glass emphasize light, openness, and a seamless connection to the outdoors.

What makes a home feel distinctly “North Idaho” to you?
I feel that the use and incorporation of natural materials helps to make a home feel more natural in the setting it is in. So for GSTARC, that would include the use of locally harvested timbers and other construction materials from nearby.
What are buyers asking for most in today’s homes?
We believe that buyers are looking for authenticity in the build itself. Handcrafted, hand built intentional design with an emphasis on indoor air quality.
What’s your favorite style of home to build in this region? Why?
While we often are presented with the opportunity to build different styles for our clients, I do prefer the Mountain West style & design. I believe it is timeless and is more commensurate with our area.
What’s one feature or detail that elevates a home the most?
In my opinion, exposed over-sized timbers create a very distinct and timeless richness to a home that you can feel.

It’s not about a specific style, it’s about how the home sits on the land, how it captures light, and how it frames views. Natural materials, strong indoor-outdoor relationships, and a sense of quiet durability all play a role. When it’s done right, the home feels like it belongs there, not like it was placed there.
What are buyers asking for most in today’s homes?
Buyers are looking for simplicity that’s executed at a very high level. Clean lines, thoughtful layouts, and materials that feel authentic rather than overly decorative. There’s also a strong desire for spaces that support how they actually live, things like seamless indoor-outdoor living, well-designed kitchens for gathering, and private areas that feel like a retreat. Underneath all of that, they want certainty. A clear process, strong communication, and confidence that the end result will match what was promised.
What’s your favorite style of home to build in this region? Why?
We tend to gravitate toward a refined mountain modern approach. It allows us to blend natural materials with cleaner lines, which fits this area really well. It doesn’t compete with the landscape, it complements it. That balance gives us room to focus on proportion, detail, and craftsmanship, which is where a home really starts to stand apart.
What’s one feature or detail that elevates a home the most?Consistency. It’s not one big feature, it’s how every detail ties together. When the proportions are right, the materials are used intentionally, and the transitions are clean, the entire home feels elevated. That level of cohesion is what people feel when they walk into a well-built home, even if they can’t immediately explain why.
